Городское население 71% (1990). Официальный язык испанский. Верующие – католики. Административно-территориальное деление: 78 муниципий. Административный центр – Сан-Хуан. Исполнительную власть осуществляет выборный губернатор. Законодательный орган – Законодательное собрание. С запада на восток простирается хр. Кордильера-Сентраль высотой до 1338 м, вдоль северного и южного берегов – низменности. Климат тропический, пассатный. Островное государство в северной части Карибского моря, официальное название - Содружество Пуэрто-Рико [Commonwealth of Puerto Rico]; имеет статус "свободно присоединившейся" к США территории. Площадь 9104 кв. км, население 3,8 млн. человек (2000), из них в столице и крупнейшем городе Сан-Хуан [ San Juan] 438 тыс. Другие города: Баямон [Bayamon], Понсе [Ponce]. Центральный о. Пуэрто-Рико (55 км с севера на юг и около 160 км с запада на восток), гористый; высшая точка - гора Серро де Пунта [Cerro de Punta], 1338 м. Несколько мелких островов. Климат тропический, жаркий и влажный, сельскохозяйственный сезон длится круглый год. Нередки ураганы и сильные бури. Крупных рек и озер нет. Большая часть населения испаноязычная, некоторое количество англоязычных выходцев из США. В свою очередь, около 2,7 млн. пуэрториканцев живут в США, главным образом в Нью-Йорке. Официальные языки - испанский и английский. Основная религия - местная разновидность католицизма. С древнейших времен остров был населен индейцами. В 1493 здесь побывал Христофор Колумб, давший ему название Сан-Хуан-Баутиста [San Juan Bautista]. Нынешним названием остров обязан Х. Понсе де Леону [ Ponce de Leon, Juan] (в переводе с испанского "Богатый порт"). В 1511 году испанцы завезли на Пуэрто-Рико сахарный тростник; для его возделывания стали завозить негров-рабов из Африки, так как местные индейцы тайно [Taino] были к тому времени практически истреблены. Остров стал стратегическим укрепленным пунктом Испании в Карибском бассейне. К концу XIX в. Пуэрто-Рико пользовался правами широкой автономии; в 1898 Испания уступила его США по мирному договору, заключенному по окончании Испано-американской войны [ Spanish-American War]. С 1917 все пуэрториканцы стали считаться гражданами США, и был учрежден выборный сенат. С 1948 жители Пуэрто-Рико сами стали избирать своего губернатора [ governor]. В 1952 страна приобрела статус Содружества. Развернутая во второй половине 1940-х программа содействия мелкому частному бизнесу "Самопомощь" [ Operation Bootstrap] привела к значительному подъему экономики, особенно в сфере обслуживания, торговле и туризме. В настоящее время в стране развивается текстильная и швейная промышленность, производство электронных компонентов, химия и нефтехимия, пищевая промышленность. В сельском хозяйстве акцент сместился с традиционных сахара, кофе и табака на производство мяса, молока и риса.
